Editorial

This issue marks our last as Editors of Behavioral Disorders. Looking back at the goals we set for the journal six years ago, we are proud to report that each has been met. First, along with the publication committee’s support, we migrated the review and publication process to a complete electronic format. The online process allowed us to return a decision to submitting authors within 4– 6 weeks. Given our focus on both a timely and high quality review process, over time, we have reduced the editorial board and eliminated reviewers who repeatedly declined to review manuscripts, did not return reviews within the timelines agreed to, or failed to provide a thorough and thoughtful review. Continuance of the remaining board members, as well as possible expansion, will be left to the incoming Editors.

Second, we continued to expand the focus of the journal to include a broader range of studies, such as academic interventions among students identified with an Emotional/Behavioral Disorder and those who are at risk due to high rates of problem behavior. The broadening of the journal has allowed Behavioral Disorders to reflect the field’s call for prevention and early intervention of EBD, while still maintaining a continued advocacy for students identified with an EBD.

Third, we continued the tradition of publishing research that adhered to rigorous standards appropriate to the research questions and related design. The acceptance rate of the journal is within the range of similar top tier journals in special education. This, of course, meant that we had to say ‘‘no’’ more often then ‘‘yes’’ to many of our colleagues. We appreciated the professional responses in those instances where manuscripts were declined and hope the peer review process provided a learning opportunity to strengthen the research and writing skills among our colleagues who continue to devote their careers to addressing the myriad of challenges among this very difficult group.

It has been our pleasure to serve and we are confident the Journal will remain a marquee publication in the hands of the incoming Editors.
