Dr. Eleanor Guetzloe

Dr. Eleanor Guetzloe has spent her almost 50-year career in special education and music education working tirelessly to educate and advocate for children and adolescents with BD, their families, and the professionals who work on their behalf. Eleanor began her career in education in 1953 as a music specialist and elementary teacher for the Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida. She has spent the past 23 years in higher education as a professor of special education at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. Her responsibilities included teaching courses, coordinating programs, supervising practicum students and advising undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. Dr. Guetzloe has authored more than 80 articles, chapters, and books and made more than 250 presentations at local, regional, and national professional development activities. Eleanor has received numerous awards and honors during her career beginning as a classroom teacher. These included being honored by Hillsborough County CEC as Special Educator of the Year in 1984. In 1993, Dr. Guetzloe was named DeForest Strunk Endowed Chair in special education at the University of San Diego. One year later, she was honored with the International CEC Contributor of the Year Award and the Spirit of Crazy Horse International Award at the Black Hill seminar.

Dr. Guetzloe's contributions to professional organizations in general, and CCBD in particular at both the state and national level are unparalleled in the history of our field. She founded the Florida chapter of CCBD in 1973 and hasn't stopped giving tirelessly to professional organizations ever since. If there is a position in our organizations, Eleanor has held it at least once. At the local level, she held the position of president of Florida CCBD and she has served on numerous task forces on all aspects of education over the years. At the national level, Eleanor has served as regional coordinator, chairperson of Regional Services and Membership, chair of the Advocacy and Governmental Relations Committee, governor, and president of CCBD. She has also been Newsletter Editor for both the Pioneer Division of CEC and national CCBD, chair of publications for the Behavioral Institute for Children and Adolescents and consulting editor for many journals. Eleanor Guetzloe is the consummate advocate and no one works harder or accomplishes more on behalf of children with BD than she does. Dr. Guetzloe's professional contributions have had a direct impact on our current research and teaching practices, and educational policy for students with BD. Her work has provided a solid foundation for the future of students with BD and the teachers and administrators who educate them.

Impressive as her professional accomplishments are, Eleanor Guetzloe is also known and loved for her fierce loyalty, kind spirit, honest and candid approach to issues, and dedication to her students. The Board of Trustees of the CCBD Foundation is pleased to honor both the woman herself and her life's work with the naming of the Eleanor Guetzloe CCBD Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship
