Frank Wood
Dr. Wood has spent the better part of his 35-year career in special education and educational psychology making significant contributions to children and adolescents with behavioral disorders, their families, and the professionals that work on their behalf. He has been a teacher and principal of both general education and special education programs and a professor of special education responsible for training teachers of children with learning and behavior problems, development, coordination, and evaluation of training programs, and research on school adjustment and social behavior of children.
Dr. Wood recently retired from the University of Minnesota where he was a professor from 1962-1999 and Professor Emeritus since 1995. He has authored or edited more than 120 journal articles, book chapters, or conference proceedings and presented more than 150 presentations at professional meetings and conferences. Dr. Wood's contributions to professional organizations in general, and CCBD in particular are enormous. He helped found Minnesota Educators of the Emotionally Disturbed and Minnesota CCBD and has held numerous positions at the national level including president of CCBD and governor of both CEC and CCBD. He has also served as editor of both Exceptional Children and Behavioral Disorders. He has been honored with three national awards for outstanding contributions to students with disabilities and behavior disorders -- The J. E Wallace Wallin Award, The Midwest Leadership Symposium Award, and The CCBD Outstanding Leadership Award. Taken as a whole, Dr. Wood's professional contributions have had a direct impact on our current research and teaching practices and public policy and have provided a solid foundation for the future of students with BD and the teachers and administrators who educate them.
Impressive as his professional accomplishments, Frank Wood is perhaps best known and loved for being one of the kindest, most giving, and caring mentors and colleagues the field has ever known. To a person, the people who have worked with him over the years consider him a selfless professional whose spirituality, integrity and unconditional regard for others make him one of a kind. The Board of Trustees of the CCBD Foundation is pleased to honor both the man himself and his life's work with the naming of the Dr. Frank Wood CCBD Foundation Graduate Scholarship.
